AI search is changing how customers discover local businesses, making citations more valuable than ever.
- AI assistants answer “best Digital Marketing Agency in Colorado Springs” with a short, named list. Being on it is the new page one.
- Each engine builds its list from a different source mix: search indexes, maps data, review platforms, and directories. You need presence across all of them, not just Google.
- The Springs twist: relocating military families ask AI about this city months before arriving, so citations here convert unusually well.
- The checklist: entity consistency, LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema, question-form content, review depth, and directory presence.
The new page one is a sentence
Ask ChatGPT for the best family dentist in Colorado Springs, and you get three to five names in a paragraph. No page two. No ads to buy your way in. Either you are in the sentence, or you do not exist for that searcher, and a growing share of Springs buyers, especially the thousands researching a PCS move from out of state, start exactly there. This post is about how the sentence gets written.
Where each engine actually gets its local answers
The engines do not share one brain. ChatGPT leans on Bing’s index and its own browsing, which makes an unclaimed Bing Places listing an unforced error. Perplexity reads the live web with citations, and it loves review platforms and “best of” lists. Google’s AI Overview draws on the same local entity data as the Map Pack, so GBP strength carries over. Claude and Gemini weigh authoritative, well-structured pages. The pattern across all of them: they synthesize what the open web already says about you. If the open web says little, the answer names someone else.
Why does this matter more in the Springs than almost anywhere?
AI citation is valuable in every market. Here it is disproportionate, because the buyers with the least local knowledge and the most urgent needs (arriving military families and other relocators) are the heaviest users of AI research, and they are choosing everything at once. A citation for “best pediatric dentist near Fort Carson” meets a family with three kids and no local network at the exact moment of decision. That query gets asked from three states away, year after year, and the cited practices harvest it continuously.

The citation checklist
Six items, in rough order of effect. Make your entity consistent everywhere (same name, address, phone, and description across your site, GBP, Bing, Apple, Yelp, and the data aggregators), because engines cross-reference before they cite. Put LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema on your site so machines can read what you do and where. Publish question-form content that answers real queries in citable, structured prose. Build review depth on multiple platforms, not just Google, since Perplexity in particular reads across them. Get present in the directories engines trust for “best of” context (for service businesses in this market: Google, Yelp, BBB, and the relevant trade and local directories). And keep your site crawlable for AI agents, including an llms.txt file, which most Springs businesses have never heard of.
The questions are worth owning
You cannot own every query, so own the ones with buyers behind them. For a Springs business, the shortlist usually includes a “best X in Colorado Springs” head term, two or three district-qualified versions (“near Briargate,” “near Fort Carson,” “downtown”), the relocation questions your category attracts, and the comparison questions late-stage buyers ask. Write the genuine, specific answer to each, put it on a page structured for machines and humans, and let the engines find a source worth quoting. Generic content gets synthesized into someone else’s citation. Specific content gets named.
How to know it’s working
Measurement is unglamorous but doable: run your target questions through the major engines monthly and log who gets named, watch for AI-referral sessions in analytics, and track branded-search lift, which rises when citations expose new audiences to your name. We run this as a standing report for clients. The businesses winning AI search in this city eighteen months from now are the ones being measured for it today, and almost nobody here is. The seat is open.
