TL;DR
- Social media is now the #1 brand discovery channel at 29%, ahead of word of mouth (24%), traditional search (22%), and AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini (16%). Source: June 2026 post-purchase surveys of buyers across 85 businesses.
- 1 in 6 buyers now first finds a brand through an AI assistant. Two years ago the channel barely existed.
- Review platforms drive just 1% of discovery. They close buyers who already found you.
- A strategy built only on Google rankings is now competing for about a fifth of the discovery pie. The four channels above account for 91% of it.

The data: where buyers actually discover brands
In June 2026, an industry study surveyed buyers across 85 businesses right after purchase and asked where they first discovered the brand. Not where they compared options or read reviews. The first touch.

Where Buyers Now Discover Brands
Stop investing only in search. Build presence wherever your buyers research. AI tools, communities, and video carry more weight every quarter.
Two things jump out. Search, the channel that has anchored digital marketing budgets for 20 years, is in third place. And the top four channels together cover 91% of all discovery, which means the long tail everyone argues about barely moves the needle.
Post-purchase surveys have a useful property here: every respondent is a real buyer. This is not a poll about preferences. These people spent money, and this is how they say they got there.
AI discovery went from zero to 1 in 6 in two years
The 16% number is the story. In 2024, AI assistants were a rounding error in discovery data. Now, roughly one in six buyers says ChatGPT or Gemini is where they first met the brand they bought from.
The adoption data backs it up. Per Pew Research (Pew Research Center, survey of 5,119 U.S. adults, February 2026), 48% of U.S. adults now use AI chatbots, up from 33% in 2024 and 25% in 2023. And 60% read the AI-generated summaries that sit on top of search results. The behavior shifted first. The discovery numbers are just catching up.
Here’s the part that should worry a business owner: when an AI assistant answers “who’s the best commercial roofer near Frisco,” it names two or three companies. There is no page two. Either the model knows you and trusts you, or you don’t exist in that conversation.
Google still matters, with an asterisk
Nobody should read this data and cancel their SEO program. 22% of discovery is still an enormous amount of business, and search keeps its old advantage: intent. A buyer typing “emergency HVAC repair Dallas” is closer to a purchase than someone scrolling Instagram.
The asterisk is that search visibility now does double duty. AI assistants and AI Overviews are trained on and cite the same content that ranks. The businesses showing up in ChatGPT answers are, overwhelmingly, businesses with strong crawlable content, clear entity signals, and consistent citations across the web. SEO didn’t stop working. It became the foundation for a second channel.
What did stop working is treating a Google ranking as the finish line. In 2019, ranking #1 meant you won discovery. In 2026, it means you won 22% of it.
The 1% review-platform number, explained
Review platforms at 1% surprises people, so it’s worth being precise about what it means. Buyers don’t discover you on review sites. They verify you there, after social or search or ChatGPT already made the introduction.
So reviews still decide whether the discovery converts. Your Google Business Profile is the cleanest example: it’s a search surface and an AI data source and your review hub all at once. A thin, half-claimed profile leaks buyers at the exact moment they’re checking whether you’re legitimate. We’ve audited hundreds of local profiles, and the gap between a maintained GBP and a neglected one shows up directly in calls and direction requests.
What small businesses should do about it
The honest answer is that most SMBs can’t run four channel strategies at once, and they don’t need to. They need one content engine that feeds all four. That’s the thinking behind our Content Everywhere℠ approach: create the content once, at a high standard, then adapt and distribute it everywhere buyers actually look. In practice, that means four moves:
Audit where you show up today
Search your category the way a buyer would, in Google, in ChatGPT, on Instagram and TikTok, and note where you’re absent. Most owners have never asked an AI assistant about their own market. Start there.
Make your content citable, and legible to AI
Direct answers to real questions, clean structure, FAQ schema, consistent name-address-phone data. This is Answer Engine Optimization, and it’s the difference between AI models knowing about you and recommending you.
Show up on social as a discovery channel
At 29%, social is where the largest share of buyers first finds brands. Educational and behind-the-scenes content beats promotional posts here, because discovery-stage buyers aren’t shopping yet.
Feed word of mouth deliberately
24% of discovery is people talking. Referral prompts, shareable content, and a review flow that asks at the right moment all turn happy customers into a channel.
One client example: a golf cart dealership we moved onto this model saw a 9% increase in website traffic, with first-page rankings and featured placements in ChatGPT and Perplexity answers. Same content budget as before. Different distribution.

Social media, at 29% of buyers, according to June 2026 post-purchase surveys of buyers across 85 businesses. Word of mouth follows at 24%, traditional search at 22%, and AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini at 16%.
16%, or about 1 in 6 buyers, say an AI tool is where they first discovered a brand they later bought from. Two years ago this channel was close to zero, making it the fastest-growing discovery channel on record.
No. Traditional search still drives 22% of brand discovery, and the same content that ranks in Google is what AI assistants cite and recommend. SEO is now the foundation of AI visibility rather than a standalone strategy.
AEO is the practice of structuring your content so AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity can find it, trust it, and cite your business in their answers. It includes direct question-and-answer content, schema markup, entity consistency, and citations across authoritative sources.
Yes. Reviews rarely introduce your business, but they decide whether a discovery becomes a customer. Buyers check reviews after finding you on social, search, or AI tools, so a weak review presence loses buyers that other channels already delivered.
Run a visibility audit: check your rankings for core keywords, ask AI assistants the questions your buyers ask, and review your social and Google Business Profile presence. Fast Hippo Media offers this as a free audit, with a prioritized roadmap of the gaps we find.
